Today is World Embroidery Day!

It’s World Embroidery Day!

Begun in Sweden just five years ago, this is a day to celebrate.

In honor of this fabulous day, I am including some of my favorite stitchers. The first is the amazingly talented Junko Oki. And while you might not associate any of these artists with “embroidery” as embroidery is typically thought of, all of them are working with thread in original and fascinating ways.

Junko Oki was one of the first hand stitchers I became aware of, and fell in love with.
Marta Brysha is a fairly new find, for me. Her work is so powerful.
Rosalie Dace. I took my first workshop ever with Rosalie Dace at Quilting By the Lake. What an amazing talent!
Paula Kovarik – while not technically a hand stitcher, what she is able to do with thread is amazing!

And finally I am adding a detail from my latest design, which has been influenced by all of these talented artists.

Let’s celebrate World Embroidery Day together!

What are you working on?
